People with substance dependency and addiction (including gambling)
● People who inject opiates (heroin, fentanyl) intravenously should all be offered DOAM services via the Hub for psychological support and opiate replacement options including suboxone or methadone
○ If someone is already on opiate replacement therapy this should be checked on SafeScript (login is individual and requires registration; firstname.surname@safescript.vic.gov.au)
● Intranasal naloxone should be opportunistically offered to all patients who use opiates (heroin) on discharge from the ED
○ Intranasal naloxone is stored in the cupboard above the computer in the ED drug room and can be accessed 24/7 without pharmacy
● Richmond Medically Safe Injecting Rooms provide a safe location for intravenous drug use with trained staff and multiple harm reduction measures onsite including naloxone, oxygen provision, safe needle exchanges and health and social support.
● Consider opportunistic interventions such as ensuring vaccinations are up to date (hepatitis B, ADT, Covid) and reviewing injection sites
● DirectLine (cards at ALERT desk) can be the community resource for patients to seek linkage to services.
